Krakow is a city steeped in history. With the first settlers arriving as far back as the 4th century, by the time the 10th century rolled around Krakow was a thriving medieval city. Perched at the Western end of the Silk Road it was a booming center of trade, importing items such as leather and spices and exporting the country’s famous salt and textiles. Having been invaded by the Mongols in 1241, Krakow was rebuilt with fortified defensive walls and towers in 1257. By the 1300s, it boosted the second university in Europe and had become a flourishing center for science and arts.
