The Tatra Mountains are the highest range of the Carpathian Mountains and lie along Poland’s border with Slovakia. A short two hour drive from Krakow, they have long been the playground of city dwellers and the inspiration for many of Poland’s most renowned artists. Of the many plein air painters that made pilgrimages to the Tatras, Jan Stanislawski was one of the great artists of the Young Poland movement that focused on the mystic experience of the landscape. With almost impressionistic application of thick oil paints he painted the dense, melodic landscapes that he loved. Read Less
