Harvested one machete chop at a time, the process of rattan weaving has been honed over the centuries by Vietnam’s artisans. First the rattan is stripped of its thorny outer layer and the core is soaked in water. The rattan is then smoked for a few days and left out in the hot sun, before it is pliable and dry enough to be woven. Once the basket is ready it is then smoked above the household hearth for a year, making it resistant to both breakage and bugs. Read Less
