If you want to know what the Alasitas fair is
like, simply imagine shopping on the modern-day island of Lilliput; there you
can buy miniature versions of goods ranging from computers to construction
materials, cell phones to houses, cars to university diplomas, and even figures
of domestic workers. Though it may seem like a fair exclusively intended for
people furnishing intricate dollhouses, Alasitas actually works more as a
glorified Christmas wish-list; items are purchased and pinned to the
poncho-clad statues of the Ekeko that most self-respecting Bolivians keep
around the house in the hope that he’ll perform his magic the coming year and
turn the miniatures into the real deal.
Over the years,
Alasitas has come to feature not only miniatures, but handicrafts from all over
South America, so if you’re in La Paz at the end of January and in the mood to
shop, make sure to stop by!
