This simple silver brooch, bought in Krakow’s Kazimierz neighborhood, recalls the legend of the Polish Winged Hussars. The hussars wore huge wooden arcs filled with eagle, swan and goose feathers on their backs as they galloped into battle. It was believed that the ‘wings’ would clatter, making the cavalry seem much larger than they were and frightening the enemy’s horses.
