Weaving has long been the realm of Poland’s peasant women and this Bialystok style rug was created using the traditional technique of ‘weaving on the harp’, on an unusually upright loom frame. The technique is known only in a couple rural provinces and is said to be the oldest in all of Northern Europe. Traditionally used for religious and family celebrations, the woven designs, known as ‘little crabs’, are thought to symbolize both the local people and the land they live upon. Read Less
