From the creamy, corn-based atole to their famously frothy hot chocolate, Oaxaca has a wide variety
of delicious beverages. Of course, exquisite elixirs deserve to be served in
beautiful vessels, which is why we picked up these blue and white ceramic cups.
Purchased in Oaxaca’s Mercado Abastos,
they were made in the state of Hidalgo, home to the famous Mexican ceramics
company Anfora. Anfora’s signature colors are blue and white, and these pretty
cups were no doubt inspired by their much sought-after wares.

Founded by a group of Germans in Mexico City just
after the end of World War I, Anfora originally produced ceramics for hotels
and restaurants. Over the next few decades, the company would rise to
prominence as the leading ceramics manufacturer in Mexico, only to be taken
over by the Mexican government during World War II, as the majority of its
shareholders were German. After the war, the company was returned to its
owners, who restored Anfora to its former glory by introducing a popular
household line. Despite the flood of cheap imports that arrived in the country
after Mexico opened its economy in 1987, Anfora has managed to survive and
thrive. Their 1.2 million square foot factory is located in Pachuca, in the
state of Hidalgo.
