As early as the 17th century, the traditional strolling players and itinerant buffoons of Poland’s marketplaces had been usurped by a travelling band of professional English actors performing Shakespeare’s plays around Poland. By the late 18th century, the last king of Poland had founded the National Theatre in Warsaw and Boguslawski had been hired to develop Polish plays that would celebrate the country’s national and linguistic identity.
