Named
for Alphonso d’Albuquerque, a Portuguese fidalgo from the 15th century whose
military genius helped establish the Portuguese colonial empire in India,
the Alphonso
is unlike any mango you’ve ever tasted—sweet, silky, and sublime. Unsurprisingly, it’s also the most

the national fruit of India, and though the country produces more than a third

international mango trade. If you’ve ever tried an Indian mango, you can kind
