There are numerous kinds of footwear to be found in Japan. Geishas wear wooden sandals with a similar woven thong upper part called getas. These clever cloth sandals made from scraps, however, reminded us of the traditional rope sandals made out hemp, cotton or palm fibers known as waraji worn by samurai and foot soldiers. We were told that the right way to wear these was to let your toes protrude over the ends. Read Less
