The Silesia region of Poland is famous for its pottery, and the town of Boleslawiec, often called Miastro Ceramiki or Town of Ceramics, is the region’s most celebrated ceramics center. Using clay excavated from the region, Boleslawiec has produced ceramics for over a thousand years. Today the process remains much the same as it always has: once the clay has been fired at an extremely high temperature it is ready to be hand-painted by the local artisans. Notable for their rich hues, these artists use tiny stamps – once cut from potatoes and still made from natural materials – to repeat unique patterns across the piece.
