Hell hath no wrath like the rudely-awakened
non-morning person. According to Oruran legend, Wari, who lived inside Mount
Uru Uru, was the Lord of the Earthquakes. Not an early-riser, every time Inti
Wara woke him up, he went after her with the indignation of one who has not had
his morning coffee—a futile attempt, as Inti Wara was the daughter of the
all-powerful Sun God, who never let old Wari lay a hand on his baby. Furious,
Wari turned the weak-willed humans to the dark side; abandoning solar worship,
they lived in darkness and squalor, worshipping base animals and drinking way to much chicha.
Taking pity on
the pathetic humanoids, Inti Wara soon came to earth on a rainbow and had Wari
exiled, whereupon she began the arduous task of re-civilizing the humans. She
took this challenge on while fighting
off various plagues that Wari had cooked up in vengeance, including a giant
snake, a giant frog, a giant lizard, and a whole army of ants—all of which Inti
Wara turned to stone. Today the rock formations of La Víbora, el Sapo, el Lagarto and las
Hormigas, you can actually go visit those vanquished monsters the next time
you’re in Oruro.
