Isabelle Valedian, pictured here showing us the proper way to wear a manta, was born in the town of Tupisa (department of Potosí), but has been in La Paz for almost 45 years.

Bright orange with a flashy purple stripe, this manta comes from Cochabamba and was purchased from Isabelle Valedian. We named it after the Cochabamba native who inspired the eminently-uplifting 1988 Hollywood classic, Stand and Deliver.

Remember Stand and Deliver, that 1988 classic of pedagogical heroism with Edward James Olmos playing a lion-hearted Calculus instructor? Turns out it was based on the life of Jamie Escalante, a math teacher from Oruru, Bolivia, who single-handedly and often in the face of an oppositional administration overhauled the math program at the beleaguered Garfield High School in Los Angeles. Famous for not letting students in the door of the classroom unless they could answer a homework question from the night before, Escalante would go on to found a pioneering AP calculus program, which would see 73 students pass the national exam in 1987. Festering tensions with the administration caused him to move over to Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento, but loyalty to the remarkable teacher was such that when he had difficulty paying for his medical bills, former pupils as well as cast members from the movie version of his life pitched in.
