Named after Michalik’s Cave, Krakow’s most infamous Belle Epoque drinking den, we like to imagine this necklace passing through the hands of the notorious Mloda Polska artists and landing around the neck of one of their free-spirited girlfriends. With its fine bronze filigreed design, the pendant may date back as far as the mid 19th century but it would have fitted well with the emergence of Art Nouveau in turn of the century Poland.

Krakow was changing at the turn of the century – the universities were flourishing and the city was becoming a crucible for intellectual thought and artistic innovation. Michalik’s Cave was the mayhem-filled haunt of these thinkers and artists, the so-called Mloda Polska or Young Poland movement. Invited to eat at the bakery-turned-bar free of charge, in exchange for small works of their art, Michalik’s Cave became the artists’ gathering place and the setting for many an absinthe-fueled cabaret show.
