Sebastiana, who’s been in La Paz for 20 years, was raised in Macha. She told us that her hometown is famous for “Tinku,” a kind of ritual combat. While Tinku has since been transformed into a very popular Bolivian folkdance, its mano-a-mano, Fight Club form still persists in certain districts.

We purchased this frazada with its bold orange and purple stripes from Ms. Sebastiana Calani Varges. It’s named in honor of Mount Mururata, whose name translates to “beheaded.”

One of the easier of Bolivia’s peaks to climb, Mururata lies roughly 22 miles from La Paz. Situated to the north of Illimani, it’s said that the taller Illimani is in fact responsible for Mururata’s flat top and shorter stature. According to legend, the two mountains used to be comparable in height. One day they got into an argument over who was taller than whom and Illimani got so angry that it chopped off its rival’s head, thus giving its neighbor the name “Mururata,” or “beheaded.” Meanwhile Mururata’s missing head is said to have rolled off to the west and become the now-extinct Sajama Volcano.
