Martin Torres lives in Tarabuco, but has been schlepping up to La Paz for 35 years to sell his textiles. He told us that he usually comes for 2-3 weeks before going back home to spend time with his family; he has two sons and two daughters.

We found this manta amongst the woven wares of Mr. Martin Torres, who told us that it comes from Oruro. Pampa Aullagas is a site in the department of Oruro that some have suggested may be the long lost city of Atlantis.

First mentioned by the Greek philosopher Plato in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias, Atlantis was supposedly an uber-advanced, nautically-dominant civilization that conquered much of Western Europe and Africa around 9600 BC, before disappearing into the ocean “in a single day and night of misfortune.” This dramatic tale has sparked people’s imaginations for centuries, and given rise to a multitude of theories about just where this vanished civilization may actually have been located. One fairly common hypothesis points to the Bolivian Altiplano, and specifically the site of Pampa Aullagas, whose physical characteristics apparently match the dialoguing Greek’s description of the lost city.
