The Guro are a Mande-speaking people that reside in the valleys around Cote D’Ivoire’s Bandama River. Guro masks are similar to the masks of their Baoulé neighbors, yet distinguished by their elegance. This specimen with its lustrous red patina is a female, or gu mask, and the comb above the coiffure suggests that the wearer is a rich lady who can’t be bothered to carry things on her head in the way her less affluent peers might.
