The granddaughter of a courtesan, and daughter of a successful film producer, Saira Banu made her Bollywood debut at the age of 19 in the 1961 film Junglee. The film—for which she received a Filmfare nomination for Best Actress—launched her career, and she worked steadily throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, gaining even more fame with the 1968 romantic comedy Padosan. Banu is married to fellow actor Dilip Kumar.
