Hand-carved in buoyant sung wood, there is something very charming about these traditional crocodile water puppets. Now ‘retired’ and returned to their natural wood state, these puppets would have originally been lacquered to a high shine, ready to perform at one of Vietnam’s traditional water puppet shows. Originating in the rice paddies of Northern Vietnam’s Red River Delta, water puppets have been entertaining villagers and royal palaces since the 11th century.

We bought these marionette puppets from master craftsman Bang in the craft village of Ha Thai. Bang and his family are some of the few Vietnamese craftsmen and women still making traditional water puppets in Vietnam. His mother moved to Hanoi in her early twenties to learn the art of carving at Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre and today she keeps watch over Bang as he carefully paints and carves figures into the buoyant sung wood.
