Located in the south-central
department of Chuquisaca, the mountain town of Tarabuco is a home to the
Yampara people. Famous for their trademark attire—bright ponchos and unusual
hats that resemble the helmets worn by the Spanish conquistadors—the Yampara of
Tarabuco also host the famous Pujilay festival, which occurs annually on the
third Sunday of March. The Pujilay (“to play” in Quechua) commemorates The 1816
Battle of Cumbate, in which the indigenous people were victorious over the
Spaniards, and is also an occasion for honoring Pachamamma. Featuring
traditional music, elaborate costumes, raucous dancing, and plenty of chicha,
the festival is pretty spectacular.
If, however, you miss the Pujilay, you should still try to get over to
Tarabuco to check out its impressive open-air market, which takes place every
Sunday.
