At one time, the now-extinct Caspian Tiger was found throughout Central Asia. A symbol of power, its likeness can be found at the entrance of Samarkand’s Sher-Dor (Having Tigers) Madrasah, in one of the very few examples of animals in Islamic art. This exquisitely-detailed miniature was hand-painted by a young man named Ulmasa, who started his training at the age of ten. There’s a long tradition of miniature-painting in Uzbekistan, where it managed to survive just under the radar of religious authorities, who considered artistic representations of living things sacrilegious.
