The Hmong people of Northern Vietnam had no written language but documented their history through oral storytelling and colorful hand-stitched story cloths called paj ntaub. Today, still hidden within the folds of old Hmong textiles, are the myths and stories of the past.
In one story, a tiger waited in the mountain woods until a young hunter came across his path. In one quick bite, the tiger ate the hunter, put on his clothes, stood up and said, “Now I am a man.” He walked back to the village and fooled all of the people into believing he was a human, save for one young, beautiful girl named Yer. The legend of the tiger and Yer begins here, with Yer’s quest to show the tiger as he truly is.
