Bold and slightly questionable geographic claims aside, Tiwanaku was a
religious mecca to which many made pilgrimages between the years 300 BC and AD
300. Lying on the southeast shore of Lake Titicaca, the region boasted abundant
rainfall, and agricultural success would produce surpluses that were
appropriated by a rising class of elites, who used llama herds to collect and
redistribute the wealth. The empire soon began to expand, absorbing other
cultures along the way. It would reach its peak between 400-900 AD, after which
period scholars say that a dramatic climate change brought severe drought to
the region, bringing the end of Tiwanaku and ushering in the era of the Incas,
who built upon the sophisticated culture of their predecessor.
