Before the actress known as "Twinkle Toes" became a Bollywood star, Vajainti Mala was a Bharathanatyam dancer who performed before Pope Pius XII at the tender age of 5. She began acting at 13, and would go on to star in a number of critically acclaimed films including Devdas, where she played the role of Chandramukhi—later named one of The Times of India's "10 Celluloid Hookers You Loved." Other notable Mala films include Gunga Jumna, for which she had to learn the Hindi dialect Bhojpuri, and Sangam, Raj Kapoor's first experiment with Technicolor, which, at 288 minutes, was also the longest running film in India at the time of its release. After leaving the world of cinema circa 1969, Vajainti Mala has kept herself busy with a turn in parliament and innumerable rounds on the golf course, where apparently she has quite the swing.
