In medieval Europe, apothecaries and alchemists stored everything from distilled animal potions to steeped dried herbs in amber apothecary containers. The non-reactive amber glass protected the carefully crafted elixirs from changing in the light. Today these storied bottles make great storage jars and bud vases.

Krakow has a long lineage of traditional apothecarists but none are as famous, or as brave, as Tadeusz Pankiewicz. The only prewar pharmacist to decline the German offer to relocate to the Aryan side of the city, Pankiewicz operated the sole pharmacy in the Nazi created Jewish ghetto of Podgorze. Risking his own life he gave medications to the Jews free of charge, supplied hair dyes for those trying to disguise their identities and offered shelter for those facing deportation. His pharmacy became a meeting place for the ghetto’s intelligentsia and a hub for underground activity.
