Krakow has a long lineage of traditional apothecarists but none are as famous, or as brave, as Tadeusz Pankiewicz. The only prewar pharmacist to decline the German offer to relocate to the Aryan side of the city, Pankiewicz operated the sole pharmacy in the Nazi created Jewish ghetto of Podgorze. Risking his own life he gave medications to the Jews free of charge, supplied hair dyes for those trying to disguise their identities and offered shelter for those facing deportation. His pharmacy became a meeting place for the ghetto’s intelligentsia and a hub for underground activity. Read Less
