Used as currency between the 16-20th centuries, trade beads like these were produced throughout Europe and brought to Africa by European traders and explorers in such quantities that at times they even served as ballast for outgoing ships. The Venetians were especially prolific bead manufacturers and many of the baubles you find feature their distinctive designs.
