Our favorite resource for midcentury modern furniture in San Francisco is Mid Century Modern Finds (MCMF). This online store founded in 2009 is owned by Carlos and Christine, a couple whose passion for flea markets and midcentury furniture eventually led them to start their own store. These two not only have great style, but they really know midcentury modern furniture, and only carry the best.
Read more about Carlos and Christine and take a peek into their amazing San Francisco home with timeless pieces of midcentury modern furniture, brass accents and a beautiful Moroccan rug!
How did you two meet?
At the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco in 2001 - dancing salsa!
How did MCMF happen?
We like to change the look of our house often, and have always collected from flea markets and estate sales. Our house is small, so when we bought something new we had to sell what we had. We love the hunt, so we turned it into a business. If we can’t keep everything, at least we can restore it and pass it on to someone else who appreciates it.
(We love the Moroccan rug in their living room!)
Where do you go to find the pieces you sell?
Pickers, dealers, estate sales, collectors (many of which are friends). People contact us daily to sell or consign with us.
What do you look for in a piece of MCM furniture?
Designers we know and like, unique pieces, collector’s items.
What's your best find?
It is hard to narrow it down because we love it all, but Carlos really likes the Pierre Cardin sideboard, Willy Rizzo coffee table, and Platner chairs. I (Christine) would probably choose the Cherner pretzel chairs, the Martin Borenstein Sofa, and the different safari chairs we’ve come across.
Who are your favorite designers?
Eero Saarinen, Milo Baughman, Adrian Pearsall, Vladimir Klagan, Peter Hvidt, Gio Ponti, Paul Evans and more...
How would you define your own style at home?
Mid-Century Modern with lots of color, chrome, brass, wood, glass
What are your favorite pieces in the store right now?
Jerry Johnson Sling Chairs, CH 34 Arm Chair by Hans J. Wegner, Don Shoemaker Chair, Raymond Loewy Bedroom Set, Jim Sweeney Desk - We love it all!
(In full disclosure, Rena’s been a fan of theirs for a while –way before Project Bly was even conceived and personally owns a credenza and chair purchased from MCMF. You can check out Rena’s home over on Design Sponge.)
