After the cloth is tied, it’s taken to the dyer. As the Mingei Folk Art Movement took hold in Japan during the 1930s, elevating traditional crafts to the level of art, painters like Motohiko Katono (1889-1975) became dyers, creating masterpieces using a tedious hand-dyeing process.
