Ironically, enshrining craft on the altar of art ended up producing quite a few famous artists, especially in the realm of ceramics. Many came from families that had practiced the craft for generations like Ohi Toshio of Kanazawa, whose family has been making Ohi pottery for 13 generations. Shaped by hand without the aid of a wheel, Ohi ceramics require the touch of a master, which Toshio certainly is.
