Sebastiana, who’s been in La Paz for 20 years, was raised in Macha. She told us that her hometown is famous for “Tinku,” a kind of ritual combat. While Tinku has since been transformed into a very popular Bolivian folkdance, its mano-a-mano, Fight Club form still persists in certain districts.

A mining town with a climate that averages around 50°, it’s no wonder people from Oruro call themselves “quirquinchos,” referring to the durable, tough-shelled creatures native to the region. Hunted for their meat, species like the Screaming Hairy Armadillo (Chaetophractus vellerosus) are also sought after for their carapaces, which are used to make traditional lute-like instruments called “charangos.” Unfortunately, the quirquincho’s popularity amongst gastronomes and charango-enthusiasts alike has helped lead to ever-dwindling population numbers and a place on the endangered species list.
