  To keep suspicions at bay, the Maeda clan turned their capital into a bastion of art and scholarship. Kaga artisans perfected the art of lacquerwork and gold leaf, Noh theater and the tea ceremony were taken to new heights, and so many scholars flocked to the city that one observer deemed Kaga “the library of the realm.”
