  Just don’t be surprised if between shrines you find crucifixes. Introduced by the Portuguese when they captured the city in 1511, Catholicism would be suppressed under the Dutch, but managed to survive until greater religious tolerance was granted. Many of the city’s Catholics have Portuguese ancestry.
