The Brits would soon prove themselves to be the uncontested masters of mispronunciation. Take, for example Chor Bazaar. “Chor,” which means “thieves” in Hindi, was actually a mispronunciation of another Hindi word, “shor,” meaning “noisy.” In a strange sort of self-fulfilling prophecy, Chor Bazaar really would become a mecca of stolen goods.
